  • Daniel Chong, the UC San Diego student who was detained by DEA officials for five days without food or water, has filed a $20 million lawsuit for being subjected to what amounts to torture: "The deprivation of food and water for four and one-half days while the person is handcuffed the entire time constitutes torture under both international and domestic law." The lawsuit was announced hours after William R. Sherman of DEA released an apology.
  • "Failure is where you have to get really creative," says Esperanza Spaulding. After an intimate dress rehearsal before a small group of fans and family, Spaulding brought a chair on stage and spent thirty minutes answering questions about creativity, inspiration and hip hop.

  • The state of New York has passed what many are calling the "DREAM fund," a bill to help undocumented students pay for college. The state Assembly voted to create a privately financed scholarship fund to help pay college tuition for children of illegal immigrants.

  • Jason "JT" Ready, a suspected neo-Nazi who made news for starting a militia to patrol the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona, reportedly killed himself yesterday after going on a shooting spree that resulted in the deaths of four people: his girlfriend, her daughter, the daughter’s boyfriend and the daughter's baby. A post on JT Ready's Facebook page blamed the murders on a "cartel assassination squad." (via Talking Points Memo)
  • People En Español's 50 Mas Bellos edition has hit newsstands this week with leading ladies on the list including celebrities such as Zoe Saldana, Thalia and Naya Rivera.
  • Sports fans continue to mourn the unexpected loss of Junior Seau, the future NFL Hall of Famer who is believed to have commited suicide yesterday in his hometown of San Diego. Seau, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, was 43 years old. Some sports writers have compared Seau's suicide to that of Dave Duerson, a former NFL star who shot himself in the chest and left a note asking to have his brain studied for football-related trauma.
